PACE in Practice

Online course CareCPD accredited Included with Nest Learn

A practical guide to using Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy with children whose early experience has taught them that adults are unsafe. The course grounds PACE in attachment theory, developmental trauma, the window of tolerance, shame and blocked trust, then works through each element with good practice and poor practice side by side.

It is clear about what PACE is not — not a behaviour-management technique, not therapy, and not a licence to abandon boundaries.

What this course covers

  • Explain how attachment, developmental trauma, shame and blocked trust shape the behaviour of children in residential care.
  • Apply playfulness and acceptance to build safety, accepting a child's inner life without endorsing the behaviour.
  • Use curiosity that wonders rather than interrogates, and empathy that feels with a child rather than rushing to fix.
  • Sustain PACE in everyday practice — holding boundaries, keeping the team consistent, and recognising and preventing blocked care in yourself.

Who it is for

Residential support workers, senior support workers, team leaders and Registered Managers working in children's homes.
