The children's home training matrix spreadsheet
A ready-made template built around how children's homes actually track training: staff by Home, mandatory and role-specific courses, renewal dates, and a status column that tells you what needs doing. Enter your email and we will send it straight over.
- Pre-filled with the core courses children's homes need
- Renewal date and status columns already set up
- Works across multiple Homes on one sheet
- Yours to keep, whether or not you ever use Nest Learn
Beyond the spreadsheet
What a spreadsheet cannot do
A spreadsheet is a snapshot that someone has to maintain. The Nest Learn Matrix is the live picture, built from actual completions, with the evidence attached.
Updates itself
Status changes the moment a member of staff completes a course. Nobody has to remember to update a cell.
Separates the four problems
Overdue training, missing assignments, expired certificates and sessions that need booking are different jobs. The Matrix never lumps them together.
Every Home in one view
Filter to one Home or see all of them at once. Each manager sees the Homes they are responsible for, and nothing else.
Online and face-to-face together
Training Status and face-to-face Booking State are tracked as separate columns, so an unbooked session is never mistaken for completed training.
The evidence sits behind every cell
Click a status and the completion record, certificate, revisions and audit history are there. Nothing to go and find in a folder.
Export for inspection
Export the filtered view when an inspector, commissioner or board asks. The spreadsheet you hand over is generated, not maintained.
Status, not guesswork
Six statuses that each mean one thing
Most matrices carry a colour and a date and leave the reader to interpret it. Nest Learn is explicit about what state each staff member is in, so the next action is obvious.
- Complete — done, in date, certificate attached
- In progress — started, not yet finished
- Overdue — assigned, past its deadline
- Expired — completed once, now out of date and needs renewing
- Needs booking — a face-to-face session with no date yet
- Not assigned — nobody has given this person the training
The dashboard is the Matrix summarised: what needs attention, and how much of it.
Common questions
Training matrix questions
What is a training matrix for a children's home?
A single grid of staff against the training each person needs, showing at a glance who is complete, who is overdue and who has not been assigned the training yet. In a children's home it usually needs to cover several Homes at once and separate online courses from face-to-face sessions.
Is the spreadsheet really free?
Yes. Enter your email address and we will send the template straight to your inbox. There is no charge and no obligation to use Nest Learn.
When does a spreadsheet stop being enough?
Usually at the point where more than one person maintains it, or when you run more than one Home. Renewal dates drift, completions get recorded twice, and there is no evidence attached to any of it. The Nest Learn Matrix updates itself from actual completions and keeps the certificates and audit history with the record.
Can I get our existing training records into Nest Learn?
Yes. Nest Learn supports historical completion imports with dry-run validation and course matching review, so existing completions and valid-until dates are preserved rather than retyped.
